Continuing Artefact Making
Once printing the plans and elevations of Wymering Manor in scale 1:20, I found that if I made my model of the manor in this scale it would not fit into the set space within the artefact, so I decided to work in scale 1:50 instead. I decided to use Balsa wood as it was cheap, I had an abundance of it, as well as it was the right colour wood I wanted to use as it creates a contrast between the model and the rest of the artefact.
I started off by drawing the floor plans of the manor on cardboard and started assembling each floor individually, then adding a 'tech' element - a part of the TV - into each of the rooms, and then gluing the three floors together, bringing the sectional model together as a whole.
Below are photos of ground and first floor of the manor before I glued them together;
I really enjoyed making the manor in this scale as it allowed me to spend more time in making smaller details of the manor that I initially overlooked;
I also found that working from the floorplans made it difficult to make some parts of the manor as it has a lot of character that is missed, overlooked, or simplified in the plans, so I worked from photos I had taken previously to correct the discrepancies.
I decided to incorporate tech elements from the TV into the model as it unifies the model and the 'set' together as the whole artefact, as well as it represents how modern technology has - in a way - snuck into the manor as time and technology has progressed.
Like in the model, the use of technology in the manor is not always obvious at first, but when consciously searching for use of technology, it becomes extremely obvious and in some cases an eyesore, for example, badly installed switches, light switches, wiring. In each room of the model, there is a form of technology inside, making a playful 'Easter-egg hunt' to spot each element through the windows and doorways, similar to how it feels to search for the use of technology within the actual manor.
